Learning is unique at Central York School District, in part because of factors that are specific to our community in York County, Pennsylvania.
Community, District and School Factors
In this community:
Central York School District is located north and east of York City in South Central Pennsylvania. The suburban school district spans nearly 25 square miles of land and encompasses North York Borough, Manchester Township, and parts of Springettsbury Township.
According to 2010 federal census data, the district serves a resident population of 40,000 people. In 2009, district residents’ per capita income was $24,557 a year and the median family income was $59,079. During the 2007-2008 school year, Central York School District received more than $12.9 million in state funding.
The district serves approximately 23,000 households, realizing growth from 2003-2008, but in recent years the population growth has leveled. According to enrollment records as of October 1, 2013, 5,732 students are enrolled in Grades K-12. The district’s community is diverse and as of Oct. 2013, 26.6% of students in Grades K-12 are minorities. In the 2012-2013 school year, 77 students were enrolled in the district’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
Seven schools make up Central York School District, including three K-Grade 3 elementary schools, two Grade 4-6 elementary schools, one middle school for grades 7 & 8, and the high school for grades 9-12. The district employed 396 faculty members, 303 support staff and 31 administrators in the 2012-2013 school year.

School Factors
Hayshire Elementary School serves 600 students in kindergarten through third grade. The faculty and staff at Hayshire Elementary School gives particular emphasis to the development of communication skills and works diligently to incite a love of learning in all the aspects of curriculum. In addition, classroom teachers, specialists and supporting staff cooperate together to create caring, learning environments.
Students at Hayshire Elementary learn and practice social skills that enhance these caring learning environments. Students are encouraged to display "Positive Hayshire P.O.W.E.R." at all times. This slogan is on display in multiple places throughout the school and reminds students that "we take care of ourselves and take care of each other".
The Parent Volunteer Program is an essential part of the school environment. As well, the Parent Teacher Organization at Hayshire Elementary plans and organizes activities and events that give support to the learning environments of the school. Together, parents, teachers and students work hard to bring success to all students at Hayshire Elementary School.

One art teacher divides time between Hayshire Elementary School and Roundstown Elementary School. The art classroom is spacious and windows line one wall. Students work at tables of 4-5 but are free to move about the room for inspiration. The classroom is equipped with technology and the teacher uses and incorporates it into lesson instruction; students may use four computers during instruction whenever necessary.
This kindergarten class is comprised of twenty two students, thirteen girls and nine boys. Students are seated at five tables.
